What am I doing now?
I’ve been building mobile apps since 2013, so for over 10 years now. I started to build Android apps as a student back in 2013 and I built them for most of my career. Then, a couple of years ago I learned Flutter and started to build mobile apps for both Android and iOS. Recently I added native iOS (with SwiftUI) to my tech stack.
In June 2023 I was laid off and instead of looking for a now job I’ve decied to go full-time into building portfolio of mobile apps as a solo founder. I did it for following reasons:
- The market was not good (and currently is even worse). A lot of layoffs means a lot of competition on the market.
- I didn’t want to waste weeks training for HackerRank-type of algorithms. Most companies required those tasks as an interview process and to me they don’t prove anything other that someone spent a bunch of time preparing for them. I prefered to build instead.
- I always wanted to do it, I’m good at iterating fast and it felt like now it’s the best time to do it.
I currently have around 1 year of savings to burn.
This doesn’t mean I’m saying no to all job offers. I might join if there will be something interesting on the horizon.
Current status
11 iOS and 2 Android apps built since July.
Income:
- ~$1k proceeds from the App Store each month (estimated, it’s not MRR).
- ~$650 rental income
Total: $1650
Ramen Profitability goal: $2300 (-$750 to go)
